An expert local guide, with a Degree in Art History, will lead you to the discovery this museum, starting from the Renaissance courtyard, surrounded on three sides by a portico with a cistern in the middle. Here, you can observe a Roman figurative sarcophagus and an Etruscan urn.
The first floor houses several different areas: paintings from the 16th Century, including masterpieces by the two main protagonists of the first half of the century, Domenico Beccafumi's and Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (called Sodoma); late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries paintings, including altarpieces originally belonging to private collections, by well-known Senese artists, such as Francesco Vanni, Alessandro Casolani, Rutilio Manetti, Astolfo Petrazzi and Bernardino Mei. Overlooking the courtyard, you can see other paintings from State Palace of the Medici.
On the second floor, works of sienese art are exhibited in chronological order: starting from the beginning to the second half of the 15th century. Among them, you can find masterpieces made by Duccio, Simone Martini, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
The top floor houses works of art originally belonging to the Spannocchi Collection , of the Piccolomini family. Here you can find paintings by Northern Italian artists, as well as Flemish, German, and Dutch artists from 15th & 16th Century, such as San Girolamo's, Albrecht Durer's and Lorenzo Lotto's works.
